Nicosia: The Police Traffic Department is intensifying its measures in anticipation of the August 15 holiday to accommodate the expected surge of holidaymakers, Traffic Police Road Safety Officer, George Milis, informed reporters on Friday. This initiative aims to streamline the movement of vehicles across the nation's roadways, especially towards coastal and mountain destinations.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the traffic police will enhance patrols and enforce traffic regulations more stringently across the road network. The focus will be on major routes leading to popular holiday spots, with specific attention given to traffic management at critical junctures. Officer Milis elaborated that the measures would involve a heightened police presence and strategic traffic control to mitigate congestion.
In particular, law enforcement will crack down on severe traffic violations. These include driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, excessive speeding, neglecting to wear seat belts, riding motorcycles without helmets, dangerous overtaking, and using mobile phones while driving. Such infractions have been identified as significant contributors to serious and fatal road accidents in recent years.
Milis also noted that heavy traffic is anticipated on Friday between 16:00 and 20:00, as residents of Nicosia travel to coastal areas and mountain resorts. Likewise, similar traffic conditions are expected on routes from Limassol to these popular destinations. The return traffic is projected to peak on Sunday from 15:00 to 21:00. Traffic Police officers are prepared to manage the flow of vehicles to ensure smoother travel and, most importantly, prevent road accidents during this busy period.
