Avlona: Incident in the buffer zone near Avlona village was resolved peacefully, UNFICYP Spokesperson Aleem Siddique told the Cyprus News Agency on Friday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, UNFICYP is aware of reports of unauthorised farming activities within the buffer zone, in the Avlona area. Peacekeepers were promptly dispatched to the location, engaged with both sides to de-escalate the situation, and ensured that calm was maintained. The matter was resolved peacefully. UNFICYP continues to monitor the area closely.
Yesterday, the Head of Avlona Community Council Menelaos Savva informed the Cyprus News Agency that Turkish farmers violated the buffer zone near the village. He noted that Turkish farmers are not only cultivating seasonal vegetables but also citrus fruits, which are a permanent crop, describing it as a dangerous situation.
Savva further explained that the agreement with the UN stipulates that only the legal owners with the relevant permits are allowed to cultivate in the buffer zone. He reported the incident to both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN.
