Nicosia: The Book of Condolences for former President of the Republic, George Vassiliou, was signed on Friday morning by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, Ministers, House President, Annita Demetriou, and the country's political leadership. The Book opened in the Presidential Palace on Friday, from 10.30 am to 3 pm.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides and the Members of the Cabinet expressed their sorrow in a signed message, stating, "With deep sorrow, we bid farewell to the former President of the Republic of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, and we honour his contribution to his homeland, Cyprus." They acknowledged Vassiliou's critical role in Cyprus' accession to the European Union and his lifelong commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue and the reunification of the country.
House President Annita Demetriou emphasized the significant impact Vassiliou had on Cyprus' modern political history. She described him as a courageous and dynamic leader with a visionary spirit. Demetriou highlighted his efforts in addressing the national issue and his achievements in modernizing the state, establishing a public university, and fostering economic and cultural development. Vassiliou's foundational role in Cyprus' EU accession was notably recognized as a lasting contribution.
The gathering at the Presidential Palace included the entire political leadership, party leaders, former President Nicos Anastasiades, Members of Parliament, current and former officials, representatives of religious communities, and members of the Diplomatic Corps.
George Vassiliou, the third President of the Republic, was elected in 1988. He passed away on Tuesday, January 13th, at the age of 94. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 1 pm.
