In her speech, the Ambassador underlined that this is the first national day reception since Hungary reopened its embassy in Nicosia in September 2023. Lakos assured that Hungary fully supports the Republic of Cyprus and stands up for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and is committed to ensuring that a solution must be within the agreed framework defined by the resolutions of the UN Security Council, in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality. In addition, Hungary also contributes to ensuring peace in Cyprus with the Hungarian contingent serving in the UNFICYP mission since 1993, she said. At the same time, she highlighted the importance of Cyprus in the humanitarian management of the Middle East conflict.

According to the press release, Marilena Raouna, Deputy Minister of European Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, emphasized in her speech that the Hungarian revolution in 1956 showed that democracy and freedom should not be taken for granted. She pointed out that 20 years ago, Hungary and Cyprus joined the EU together. She highlighted the excellent cooperation
between Hungary and Cyprus in the fields of education, culture, and economy. The re-opening of the Hungarian Embassy in Nicosia is an indication of excellent relations as well, she said.

Around 200 people participated in the reception held by the Embassy of Hungary, which holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for this semester. During the event Hungarian musicians and folk dancers performed with great success, and the participants could view a small exhibition about the typical Hungarian products, called ‘Hungaricums’, the press release noted.
