Nicosia: A Conference of Chairs of the Agriculture Committees of the Parliaments of the EU Mediterranean member states will take place in Cyprus on Friday, as part of the effort to strengthen dialogue and cooperation among the parliaments of Mediterranean countries. A House press release said on Thursday the aim is to exchange experiences and seek common solutions to the collective challenges facing the agricultural sector in the Mediterranean region.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the conference, hosted by the House of Representatives, will focus on three thematic areas of critical importance for the present and future of agriculture. The first will address the management of the impacts of the climate crisis, water scarcity, and geopolitical tensions on the agricultural sector, with a particular emphasis on the need for integrated and sustainable management of water resources.
As part of the second thematic area, the House’s press release noted, there will be an exchange of views on the future of agriculture and food in the EU, aiming to promote policies and strategies that enhance sustainability, resilience, and competitiveness in the agri-food sector.
The third area will include presentations on legislative initiatives and best practices at the national level that accelerate the transition toward resilient and sustainable agri-food systems. Participants in the conference will include the Presidents of the Agriculture Committees of Spain’s Congress of Deputies and Senate, the Croatian Parliament, the Italian Senate, and the Vice President of the Economic Committee of the French National Assembly.
The conference will be addressed by the President of the House of Representatives and the chairman of the Agriculture Committee while Christophe Hansen, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food will also deliver a speech. At the end of the conference, a Joint Declaration will be adopted, which will be sent to the EU institutions and will reflect the specific challenges faced by Mediterranean Member States in the field of agriculture, as well as their common objectives, in view of the next Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034 and the upcoming reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
