House Speaker Annita Demetriou on Thursday received the Polish Ambassador to Cyprus Irena Lichnerowicz – Augustyn whom she briefed about her recent trip to Warsaw, the meeting of the Women Heads of Parliaments of EU Countries and the visit to refugee shelters in the Polish-Ukrainian borders. The trip, between April 19-21, was organised by the Head of the lower house of the national legislature of Poland Elzbieta Witek.
On the agenda today’s meeting were also the humanitarian, economic and geopolitical aspects of the Russian invasion to Ukraine.
Speaking about the visit to reception centers and humanitarian aid centers in the borders, Demetriou said that this trip made it easier for someone to better comprehend what the Cypriot refugees went through following Cyprus’ invasion by Turkey in 1974.
Demetriou also noted that the women and children refugees are particularly vulnerable and they are at risk of becoming victims of domestic and sexual violence and trafficking.
She also briefed the Ambassador on the decisions taken during the meeting of the Heads of Parliaments of EU member states in Warsaw including the set up of an online platform for information and assistance to refugees in their language as well as the online education of children.
She said that final decisions will be taken in the next days during a videoconference.
The Polish Ambassador expressed her readiness to assist in any way for the implementation of the decisions.
