House President thanks Latvian counterpart for stance on Cyprus issue

President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou has expressed her sincere thanks for the stance of the Latvian authorities regarding the Cyprus problem.

According to a press release by the House, the President of the House of Representatives had a meeting on Wednesday with President of the Parliament of Latvia Daiga Mierina in Riga. Demetriou is currently in Riga to participate in the Third Parliamentary Summit of the International Platform for Crimea, hosted by the Parliament of Latvia.

During the meeting, the President of the Parliament noted the importance of the meeting for reaffirming the unwavering support of the international community to the independence, national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The Presidents of the two Parliaments underlined that in order to maintain international legitimacy, it is necessary that every military aggression, every border violation against a sovereign state and every violation of international law be condemned and dealt with by coordina
ted international measures.

The President of the Parliament expressed sincere thanks for the stance of the Latvian authorities regarding the Cyprus problem. Demetriou underlined the strong will of the Greek Cypriot side for the immediate resumption of talks, with the aim of a just resolution of the Cyprus issue, within the framework of the Resolutions of the UN Security Council and on the basis of the principles of international law and the European Union, of which Cyprus and Latvia are member states.

We are at a pivotal point with regard to the Cyprus problem, the President of the Parliament said, stressing great importance of supporting this renewed effort by all EU member states, such as the friendly country Latvia.

They both praised the very good relations between the two countries and Parliaments, which, as they noted, are based on common principles and values, and discussed ways to further strengthen them at all levels, The President of the Parliament also expressed Cyprus’s support for the “Baltic R
ailway Interconnection Project” with the European railway network.

The two Presidents also exchanged views on the critical period that Europe and the whole world are going through due to the dangerous situation in the Middle East and underlined the urgent need for de-escalation.
