Nicosia: The presence in Cyprus of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, is an opportunity that must be seized with seriousness, responsibility, and unity, said the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, addressing the World Conference of Diaspora Cypriots on Tuesday evening.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou highlighted the significance of the annual gathering of Diaspora Cypriots, describing it as a living bridge connecting generations, continents, and people. She emphasized that Cypriot Hellenism remains united and strong, capable of achieving remarkable feats when in unity.
Demetriou reiterated the enduring demand for the liberation and reunification of Cyprus, stressing the importance of the Secretary-General's presence in facilitating progress toward resolving the Cyprus problem. She called for the resumption of substantive negotiations based on the agreed framework defined in the relevant UN resolutions and EU principles, aiming for a solution that ensures security and prosperity for all legal residents of Cyprus.
The House President acknowledged the diaspora's significant role in keeping the Cyprus issue on the international agenda, fostering relationships with governments and international organizations, and contributing to the nation's economic, scientific, business, and cultural advancements. She praised the diaspora for maintaining Cyprus's language, traditions, and customs, serving as ambassadors globally.
Demetriou also highlighted the era's new challenges and opportunities, emphasizing the potential for cooperation between Cyprus and the diaspora through technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. She urged the state to leverage this relationship by building modern cooperation structures and strengthening ties with expatriates.
Concluding her address, Demetriou expressed confidence in Cyprus's potential to be a beacon of security, stability, and prosperity for future generations through unity and cooperation.
