Nicosia: Deepening the very good bilateral relations and the Cyprus problem were discussed during a meeting held on Tuesday by President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, and Ambassador of Kuwait to Cyprus, Abdullah Musaed Al Kofari, on the occasion of the completion of his term in Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the House of Representatives issued a press release stating that Demetriou expressed gratitude towards Kofari for the excellent cooperation he maintained with the House of Representatives during his term. She also acknowledged Kuwait’s steadfast support regarding the Cyprus problem.
The press release highlighted that the Kuwaiti Ambassador reiterated his country’s ongoing commitment to supporting the resolution of the Cyprus problem based on principles since 1974. He emphasized that Kuwait would resist any pressure to recognize the pseudo-state.
Both Demetriou and Kofari acknowledged the strong relations between their countries, extending to parliamentary collaboration, and expressed their mutual desire to further deepen these relations across various levels.
Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution remains elusive due to Turkish intransigence. The most recent negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without agreement.
Further discussions on Cyprus took place in New York on July 16-17, 2025, with another meeting anticipated later this year. UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres noted the ongoing initiatives reflect a commitment to dialogue, and he plans to meet with Cyprus leaders during the General Assembly high-level week in September.
Discussions continue on unresolved issues, including opening crossing points and establishing a solar energy installation in the buffer zone. Both sides have agreed to cooperate on several issues, such as exchanging cultural artifacts. Maria Angela Holgun, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, will persist in her mediation efforts.
The European Commission has appointed Johannes Hahn, a former European Commissioner, as Special Envoy for Cyprus, to support the settlement process in collaboration with Holgun.
