House President Addresses Ongoing Search for Missing Persons in Cyprus

Nicosia:The search for answers regarding the fate of missing persons in Cyprus remains an open humanitarian wound, according to House President Annita Demetriou. Speaking before the Plenary on Thursday, Demetriou emphasized the deep pain and uncertainty faced by relatives who continue to await the truth about their loved ones.

According to Cyprus News Agency, October 29 has been designated by Parliament as the Day of the Missing in Cyprus. This date was chosen in remembrance of October 28, 1974, when the last Greek Cypriot captive was released by Turkish occupying forces. Demetriou expressed Parliament's steadfast support for the families of the missing and underscored the urgent need to enhance efforts to ascertain their fate. She called on Turkey to fulfill its international obligations by providing all relevant evidence and aiding the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus without further hindrance.

Demetriou highlighted that uncovering the truth is essential for justice and respect for human rights. She assured the families, who have been waiting for decades, that the quest for answers and justice remains a steadfast duty of the state and society. The plenary session was attended by key figures, including Maria Kalpourtzi, President of the Panhellenic Committee of Relatives of Unregistered Prisoners and Missing Persons of the Cyprus Tragedy, Nikos Sergides, President of the Pancyprian Organization of Relatives of Unregistered Prisoners and Missing Persons, Vice President Yiannakis Kolliou, and member Maria Leontiou.
