Nicosia: The visit of the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy to Cyprus, Maria Angela Holgun, which had been scheduled for September 10, has been postponed, Cyprus News Agency learns.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Nicosia was informed that Holgun's trip has been postponed, and the possibility of holding meetings with her in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, during the final ten days of September, will be considered.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, said he hoped that the document recording the areas of convergence on the Cyprus issue, which is being prepared by the United Nations, would be ready by the time Holgun arrived in Cyprus on September 10. The next one-on-one meeting between President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhrman is scheduled for September 9, as part of their agreement to hold weekly meetings over the coming period.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose term nears its end, announced he would convene another meeting in broader format, after adequate preparation, but gave no timeline. He secured to that end the consensus of both sides and of the guarantor powers. Mara Angela Holgun, Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is tasked to engage with the parties. Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto acts as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, succeeding EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
