Holguín Works with Cyprus Leaders on Trust-Building Initiatives

New york: The UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Angela Holguín, is diligently engaging with both Cypriot leaders to advance trust-building initiatives, particularly focusing on opening additional crossing points, this was confirmed by Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, during a press briefing held at the UN headquarters. According to Cyprus News Agency, Holguín recently concluded a visit to the island, where she facilitated a meeting between the two leaders on January 28. Dujarric emphasized the UN Secretary-General's stance that political will is essential to maintain momentum, foster trust, and potentially resume negotiations. Further developments include an upcoming meeting between the Secretary-General and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhrman on February 11 in New York, marking their first encounter to discuss the Cyprus issue. The Secretary-General also plans to meet with Greek Cypriot leader, President Christodoulides, at a later date. The division of Cyprus dates back to 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern region. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, including a failed negotiation round in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, progress remains elusive. The Secretary-General previously hosted informal meetings in 2025, with more discussions anticipated. Holguín's role involves engaging the parties, alongside former European Commissioner Johannes Hahn, who serves as the Special Envoy for Cyprus. Together, they aim to contribute to the settlement process for this long-standing issue.
