Holguin in Cyprus on the 11th or 12, sources say

UN Secretary General’s personal envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, is expected to return to Cyprus around the 11 or 12th March, according to CNA sources.

In her statement earlier this month, Holguin had said her ‘next trip will begin in London the first week of March to complete the round of contacts with the guarantor powers”.

She will then return to Cyprus where she hopes “to meet with leaders of political parties, representatives of social sectors, chambers of commerce, and economic sectors, in addition to talking again with Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriot leaders.’

Holguin will not be able to attend an event which the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is holding to mark the 60th anniversary of the Force on the island.

CNA has learnt that the leaders of the two communities will be invited at the event but are not expected to attend due to other obligations.

The focus of the event will be on civil society members attending as well as ambassadors.

Cyprus has been div
ided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
