Health Minister Stresses WHO Reform at World Health Assembly

Geneva: Cyprus' Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides highlighted the importance of the ongoing reform of the World Health Organization, stressing that it is essential for the WHO to continue its transformation to improve efficiency, readjust its priorities, and ensure sustainable funding. He made these remarks at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Charalambides addressed the Plenary on behalf of the 27 member states of the EU, in his capacity as Minister of the member state holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, presenting the joint EU statement.

The Minister acknowledged the importance of national responsibility and international cooperation in shaping and implementing health policies, while also underscoring the institutional role of the WHO in setting standards, promoting health equity, and strengthening global health security.

In addition, he noted that the EU supports a streamlined and effective reform of the global health architecture, as well as stronger pandemic preparedness.

Charalambides reaffirmed that the EU and its member states remain firmly committed to multilateral cooperation and to the shared goal of health for all.
