Minister of Health Dr Popi Kanari has said it was important that children from Cyprus, Greece, Egypt and Lebanon are being examined by doctors from the Shriners Children’s Hospitals. According to an official press release, the Minister visited on Wednesday the George and Thelma Paraskevaides Foundation where since Monday, children from Cyprus, Greece, Egypt and Lebanon, are being examined by doctors from the Shriners Children’s Hospitals. It is noted that from Monday, October 23 until Friday, October 27, a total of 150 children, who face serious orthopedic problems, will be examined by the doctors. In statements after the visit, Kanari thanked the Foundation for its long-term contribution and also thanked the doctors of the Shriners International hospitals, who have been offering their services free of charge since 1981, through the Foundation to the children of Cyprus and from this year also to the children of neighboring countries. She pointed out that since operations are now carried out in Cyprus, an infrastructure is being created to serve children from other countries, neighboring countries as well as from European Union countries. Kanari added that in previous years, children from Cyprus or from other countries had to travel to the US to receive these services and said that it is a very important development that those services are now offered in Cyprus. Director of the Foundation, Costas Paraskevaides, thanked the Minister for her efforts and said that Cyprus is now becoming a Regional Center offering treatments through the Shriners. Chairman of the Board of the 22 Shriners International hospitals, Ed Stolze, expressed satisfaction for the fact that after so many years, children from Cyprus have the opportunity to be operated in their homeland, thus recovering better, faster and avoid the long trip to the US.
