Health Care as a Pillar of Resilience, Says Cypriot Health Minister at EU Council

Nicosia: Health is not merely a social priority but a strategic investment in Europe's resilience, competitiveness, and long-term prosperity, according to Health Minister Neofytos Charalambides. This was the focal message during his opening remarks at the Informal Meeting of EU Health Ministers held in Nicosia, organized under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Charalambides emphasized the Cyprus Presidency's commitment to addressing complex challenges such as geopolitical tensions, economic pressures, social inequalities, and environmental risks affecting European citizens. He outlined a vision for health in Europe based on solidarity, equality, innovation, and social cohesion, which are considered fundamental values of the European Union.

The Health Minister highlighted the importance of approaching health as a cornerstone of development, advocating for cooperation towards a stronger European Health Union. Emphasizing the need for greater resilience, cohesion, and strategic autonomy, he stressed the importance of ensuring access to medicines, technologies, and quality care for all European citizens, particularly during urgent threats or external crises.

Charalambides called for a shared, people-centered European health policy aimed at significantly improving the lives of European citizens. He underscored the value of trust, dialogue, and mutual respect in addressing critical legislative and policy issues.

The meeting's agenda focused on mental health and inclusiveness, especially for young people. Charalambides announced an initiative to establish a European Center of Clinical Excellence for pharmaceuticals to enhance transparency, decision-making quality, and coherence across European health systems.

In addition, the Minister expressed aspirations to contribute to the effective implementation of the European Health Data Space, a key tool for connecting health systems, fostering artificial intelligence, and facilitating the transition towards an integrated Health Union. He concluded by reaffirming the Cypriot Presidency's commitment to strengthening prevention, quality of care, and scientific excellence across the Union.
