Nicosia: UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq addressed inquiries regarding the language used by Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres when discussing the situations in Syria and Cyprus. The questions were posed by i24NEWS journalist Mike Wagenheim, who noted discrepancies in Guterres' statements during visits to the two regions.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Wagenheim highlighted that Guterres emphasized Syria's sovereignty and criticized Israeli actions in the Golan Heights, yet did not explicitly mention Turkey's occupation of northern Cyprus since 1974 in his remarks during a visit to the island. When asked if Turkey was "off-limits," Haq responded by pointing out the distinct dynamics of each situation and referenced the consistent policies the UN has maintained over the past five decades.
Haq explained that Guterres' approach to Cyprus was consistent with past UN efforts, focusing on supporting Cypriot communities in their pursuit of a comprehensive settlement. Haq stated that the Secretary-General's comments align with the historical context and resolutions established by the Security Council in the 1970s.
The situation in Cyprus has remained tense since Turkey's invasion in 1974, which led to the division of the island. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution remains elusive. Guterres has announced plans for another meeting involving both Cypriot communities and guarantor powers, although no timeline has been provided.
