Nicosia: UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, announced the convention of a new 5+1 meeting focused on the Cyprus problem, following adequate preparation on confidence building, methodology, and substance. This meeting aims to address and build upon the convergences already achieved.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Guterres made this announcement after a joint meeting with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, at the United Nations Protected Area at Nicosia airport. He stated that there is consensus from both sides and the guarantor powers to proceed with the meeting. However, Guterres emphasized the importance of adequate preparation to ensure tangible results, stating, "I don't want to have more five-plus-one meetings without results." He also mentioned that there is no defined deadline for the meeting.
Guterres highlighted the critical importance of finding a solution to the Cyprus issue, not only to preserve the interests and peace of the Cypriot people but also to contribute to stability in a region that is becoming increasingly unstable.
