Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis conveyed to Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides Greece's unwavering support to Greece while President Christodoulides said that in the coming months, 'we will likely take crucial and bold decisions.' The two were speaking at the beginning of their tete-a-tete meeting at the Presidential Palace on Saturday evening just before a special event to mark the 50th anniversary since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 President Christodoulides and his wife Philippa Karsera Christodoulides received Mitsotakis and his wife Mareva Mitsotakis a little before 20:00 at the Presidential Palace. The President thanked Mitsotakis for his symbolic visit to Cyprus, adding that it is the first time that a Prime Minister of Greece visits Cyprus on the day of the anniversary for the events condemning the invasion and occupation of Cyprus. The meeting today reflects the level of relations between the two countries but also the personal relationship they have, President Christodoulid es said, adding that Greece and Cyprus as brethren states, will jointly continue their efforts. He stressed the important role played by the EU for the solution of the Cyprus problem, noting that 'the Cyprus problem will be resolved only through the EU' and adding that the EU 'has answers and solutions for such issues.' The next months, President Christodoulides said, 'will be difficult and crucial' adding that 'we will likely take crucial and bold decisions.' We are ready to go down in history and to reunify Cyprus in accordance with UN resolutions, he pointed out. On his part, the Greek Prime Minister thanked President Christodoulides for the meeting and also noted the significance of his presence in Cyprus on this day. He expressed Greece's unwavering support for the solution of the Cyprus problem, adding that the support of the Greek state is a given. 'In the coming months, we will likely take crucial and bold decisions. We are ready to go down in history and to reunify our country, to reunify Cyprus , always on the basis of the agreed framework,' the President said. 'The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member state and will continue to be after the solution of the Cyprus problem and after its reunification, the settlement, it will be able to make the most of all its possibilities,' he added. On his part, Mitsotakis said that he is here 'to categorically and unreservedly state Greece's unwavering support to Cyprus, our unwavering support to the new effort which should reunify the island in the framework of United Nations decisions.' Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Columbia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forwa rd in the Cyprus issue.
