Nicosia:The Greek Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, reaffirmed Greece's unwavering support for Cyprus during a press statement following the military parade in Nicosia, which marked Cyprus Independence Day.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Dendias emphasized that the parade underscored a significant milestone, highlighting Cyprus as an independent, democratic, sovereign, and European state celebrating 66 years of independence. He acknowledged the country's struggles, noting that Cyprus has endured the repercussions of invasion and occupation for over fifty years.
Dendias stressed the importance of defensive capability for maintaining freedom, sovereignty, security, and democracy. He mentioned that Greece is enhancing its deterrence capacity through Agenda 2030, with a strong commitment to international law, including the law of the sea.
He reiterated Greece's steadfast support for Cyprus, pointing out the presence of Greek aircraft at the parade and the participation of ELDYK, the Greek military force in Cyprus. Dendias assured that Greece remains committed to standing by Cyprus.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Efforts to resolve the division through UN-led peace talks have been unsuccessful, with the most recent negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana ending without a resolution.
