Athens reacted immediately to the statements made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from the Turkish occupied territories of Cyprus, with diplomatic sources noting that Greece in coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, remains firmly committed to the solution of the reunification of Cyprus, in the framework of the UN resolutions, and will continue to do so.
Greek diplomatic sources noted that Greece’s positions on the Cyprus problem have been clearly stated and consistent for decades and stressed that they are expressed in a unified manner by the Greek Prime Minister and the Greek government.
“Greece, in coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, remains firmly committed to the solution of the reunification of Cyprus, in the framework of the UN resolutions, and will continue to do so. There is no question of deviation from this position, which is in accordance with international law, nor could there be,” the diplomatic sources stressed, adding that the Greek Prime Minister will make a statement on
this issue on Saturday in Nicosia.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Columbia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
