Greece Affirms Support for Cyprus Amid Regional Tensions

Nicosia: Greece confirms in practice that it stands firmly by the Republic of Cyprus, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides stressed Wednesday. In a post on 'X', the President thanked, on behalf of the Cypriot people, the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, for the immediate and decisive response to the request of Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Greek Prime Minister addressed the Hellenic Parliament, stating that Greece is present with responsibility and strength wherever national duty calls. This statement referred to Greece's deployment of two frigates and four F16 Viper aircraft to Cyprus following regional developments.

In the early hours of March 2, a Shahed-type drone struck military facilities in the British Bases, hosted in Akrotiri, in the southern tip of Cyprus, causing minor damage. This occurred amid regional turmoil following US-Israeli attacks on Iran. The attack by the Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicle, believed to be linked to Hezbollah operating in Lebanon, prompted heightened security measures. Several countries, including Greece, France, and the UK, announced the deployment of warships, fighter jets, and other military assistance to shield Cyprus. Nicosia has reiterated that it has no involvement in the wider Middle East conflict.
