Government will support local authorities to follow the road of Green Deal, Minister says

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment Costas Kadis vowed today that the government will support local authorities to follow the path of the EU Green Deal aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Addressing an event to mark the fact that the Municipality of Athienou is the first local authority to join the Cypriot Municipalities adjustment to the EU Green Deal, Kadis said the Green Deal aims at a more green and sustainable growth model.

“This is the model that gives our generation the tools and the funds to satisfy our needs without depriving the future generations of the possibility to satisfy theirs,” he said.

Kadis went on to say that Cyprus implements the Green Deal in actions through tools provided by the EU and namely the €1.2 billion Recovery and Resilience Fund which incorporates more than €0.5 billion or 42% of total funding in the green transition.

From all sectors, Green Transition projects covers 42% of the plan “Cyprus tomorrow” budget while it provides tools through the EU’s structural funds and other funds such as the common agricultural policy.

“All this constitute a huge investment, we may not see results directly but surely the future will better for our children,” Kadis added.

Assuring that the government will support local authorities to follow the patch of the Green Deal, the Minister said there are many funds for local authorities.

“And we will work together to show the way local authorities should move to so to utilise as much funds as possible from the specific tools,” he said.

Referring to the Athienou, Kadis said the Municipality has entered to circular economy projects starting from agriculture and move to local authorities’ operation, proving that the Municipality know how to exploit EU funding and EU tools.
