Government Spokesperson Highlights Need for Enhanced Defence Measures Amid Ongoing Occupation

Nicosia: We have an obligation, as a semi-occupied country, to constantly strengthen our defence, Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said on Thursday, in Nicosia.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Letymbiotis made these remarks during a media briefing at the Presidential Palace, responding to comments by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar concerning the Republic of Cyprus’ armament programme. These comments followed Wednesday’s military parade celebrating the anniversary of Cyprus’ independence. The Spokesperson emphasized that the government’s actions are focused on defending the nation, reminding Tatar and Turkey of the continued impact of the invasion and occupation that has persisted for 51 years. He highlighted the occupation of 37% of Cyprus’ territory, the presence of 30,000 Turkish soldiers, and the displacement of over 160,000 Greek Cypriot refugees.

Letymbiotis elaborated on the government’s efforts to bolster the country’s defence and deterrence capabilities, noting that Cyprus is a member state of the European Union. He mentioned cooperation with European partners and the utilization of programmes like SAFE, which provide funds exceeding one billion euros. These measures are seen as essential for a country that is semi-occupied and continues to face significant security challenges.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite multiple rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has yet to be achieved. The most recent negotiations, which took place in July 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, concluded without agreement.
