Nicosia: Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, announced on Thursday that the State will provide immediate financial support to the community councils affected by the wildfires in the Limassol district. This decision comes as an initial measure to address the aftermath of the devastating fires that struck the area on Wednesday, focusing on covering emergency needs, restoring damaged properties, and providing temporary housing for those affected.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Letymbiotis expressed the State’s profound sorrow for the loss of two citizens during the fires, describing the situation as ‘unprecedented’. He highlighted the multiple simultaneous fire outbreaks that have caused significant property damage, endangered lives, and threatened the natural environment. Furthermore, President Nikos Christodoulides has been in direct communication with local community leaders and relevant officials to coordinate the government’s response.
The financial support aims to assist community councils in addressing immediate needs, fully restoring property damage, and ensuring temporary housing and basic necessities for those impacted. Letymbiotis extended the State’s gratitude to the firefighters, members of the Forestry Department, Civil Defence, National Guard, Police, District Administration, and volunteers for their relentless efforts under challenging conditions.
In response to inquiries about international assistance, Letymbiotis confirmed that the European mechanism’s support had been requested. Currently, 14 primary and three secondary aircraft are operationally ready, and additional aircraft from Jordan, Egypt, Israel, Spain, and the United Kingdom are aiding in the efforts. The government continues to seek further international help as crews work tirelessly to extinguish the fires in three critical locations.
Addressing concerns about the government’s preparedness for such disasters, Letymbiotis stated that all plans and protocols were activated promptly under ‘unprecedented conditions’. Despite the difficult circumstances exacerbated by high temperatures, strong winds, and drought, over 250 personnel and more than 75 vehicles are engaged in the firefighting efforts, excluding the numerous volunteers participating.
Regarding suspicions of arson, Letymbiotis mentioned that the Police are investigating some claims. He also acknowledged offers of assistance from the Turkish Cypriot leader and other officials but noted that the primary need is for aircraft support, which is being addressed.
