The government awaits for the next visit of the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Cyprus Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar during which the next steps for the resumption of Cyprus negotiations will be discussed, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said on Friday, following a meeting held between the envoy and the President of Cyprus at the Presidential Palace. In statements after the meeting the Spokesman said that the meeting was very constructing adding it was the continuation of their first meeting, where the President of the Republic had the opportunity to discuss with the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General about the meetings she had with civil society and exchange views through a very constructive dialogue. "The President of the Republic highly appreciates the efforts made by Holguin in the process of creating the conditions for the resumption of negotiations from the point where they have been interrupted," he noted, adding that "we look forward" to her next visit to Cyprus a fter the meetings she will hold in the next period. Asked who the envoy will meet in Ankara, the Spokespersn said that this is something to be announced by her or the United Nations. Invited to day if the government is more optimistic after Holguin's contacts, he said that the first meetings were the first informative meetings that the envoy held in Cyprus, adding that "very important meetings" will follow in Athens, Ankara and Brussels. "And we look forward to her next visit to Cyprus, where the next steps in this effort to restart negotiations will be discussed," Letymbiotis pointed out. The Spokespersn was also asked whether she proposed a specific plan for the next steps. He replied that there was an exchange of views after the meetings she had with civil society. "Let's wait for the next meeting," he added. Letymbiotis said that today the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General informed the President about the meetings she had with the civil society and there was an exchange of views following the first meeting she had with the President of the Republic. Asked whether she also informed him about her meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, given its importance, he said that "all meetings are essential in this context." "Certainly the meeting she had with Mr. Tatar is essential", he noted and pointed out that the meetings she will have in the next period in Athens, Ankara and Brussels will also be important. Asked if common ground was beginning to show, the Spokesperson said we would have to wait. Our goal, he said, is to help create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations. "We believe that if there is the same political will on the other side, this can become possible very soon, from the point where they have been interrupted," he added. Invited to say whether Holguin asked for something specific from the President of the Republic, the Spokesperson said no, adding that "it was a very constructive discussion". Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occup ied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
