Skopje: Alexandros Ghamrawi won the gold medal for Cyprus in the hammer throw with a performance of 78.32m on the penultimate competition day of the 18th European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) “Skopje 25”, which is taking place in Skopje, North Macedonia from July 20 to 26, Cyprus Olympic Committee has said.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Greek athlete Sotiris Gentekos finished second in the event with a throw of 77.36m, while the medals were presented to the winners by the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Isidoros Kouvelos.
Ghamrawi’s medal is the second for the Cypriot delegation at the European Youth Olympic Festival “Skopje 25”, after the bronze medal of Marina Hadjicosta in discus throw, and raises Cyprus’ total medal haul since the establishment of the event in 1991 to 21. This is the sixth gold medal in Cyprus’ history at the EYOF events and the first in the hammer throw.
It is added that the President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, Georgios Chrysostomou, and the members of the Executive Board expressed their warm congratulations to Alexandros Ghamrawi, his coach Skevi Theodorou and all the members of the delegation, emphasising that this is a historic moment for Cypriot sports.
Among the other results from the fifth competition day at the 18th EYOF 2025, the 5th place of Anthony Sofocleous in Taekwondo stood out.
