Nicosia: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has affirmed Germany's readiness to assist Cyprus if necessary, following discussions in Nicosia with Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. The dialogue comes amidst escalating tensions in the region due to the ongoing conflict with Iran.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Kombos emphasized the need for Europe to actively engage in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation, asserting that Cyprus is part of the solution rather than the problem. He highlighted the crisis's impact on global stability, including concerns over energy prices, maritime navigation, and supply chains. As Cyprus holds the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU, Kombos reiterated the island's peaceful stance, distancing it from military aggression.
Kombos expressed gratitude to nations that have supported Cyprus's defensive capabilities and prioritized the safe repatriation of Cypriot citizens from danger zones. He noted the successful evacuation of over 99% of Cypriots and residents, along with 35 German nationals, through Cyprus, with ongoing plans for third-country nationals.
The bilateral relations between Cyprus and Germany remain robust, with prospects for collaboration in culture, education, and maritime affairs. The Cypriot Foreign Minister reaffirmed the alignment of both nations on supporting Ukraine and stressed the importance of focusing on regional opportunities beyond crises.
Wadephul acknowledged Cyprus's challenging situation, citing a recent Iranian drone attack on a British military base as evidence of Tehran's threat. He expressed appreciation for Cyprus's composed response and reaffirmed Germany's solidarity, describing Cyprus as a crucial partner and an evacuation hub in the region.
The German Minister also addressed the dual threats faced by Europe, emphasizing that the crises in both the Middle East and Ukraine must be addressed without overshadowing each other. He praised European partners' support and reiterated that security is a shared responsibility.
