Gender Equality Commissioner Participates in High-Level Conference on Femicide in Rome

Rome: Commissioner for Gender Equality, Josie Christodoulou, will participate in a high-level international conference in Rome on femicide, following an invitation from Italy’s Minister for the Family, Natality and Equal Opportunities, Eugenia Roccella.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the conference is co-organised by the Italian Presidency of the EU and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), and will be attended by European ministers, UN and OSCE experts, as well as civil society representatives.

The Cypriot Commissioner for Gender Equality will take part in a discussion on the legal framework for addressing femicide. On the sidelines of the conference, the Commissioner is to hold bilateral meetings with the European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, the Italian Minister for the Family, Natality and Equal Opportunities, the Serbian Minister for Gender Equality, Violence Prevention and Women’s Empowerment, Tatjana Macura, the Greek Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michailidou, and the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalem.

According to the announcement, the conference will provide a meaningful opportunity to strengthen international cooperation, exchange best practices for tackling femicide, and set a clear path towards eliminating femicide.
