G/C and T/C Parties Urge for Substance-Focused Talks on Cyprus Issue

Nicosia: Leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, participating in the bicommunal dialogue under the auspices of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Nicosia, have called on parties attending the upcoming multilateral conference on the Cyprus issue in July to engage in negotiations focused on the substance of the Cyprus problem. The aim is to reach a comprehensive and sustainable solution based on United Nations resolutions, international law, and the European acquis communautaire.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the parties met on Wednesday at Ledra Palace in the Nicosia buffer zone, where they held discussions led by George Georgiou, Spokesperson and member of the Political Bureau of the Greek Cypriot party EDEK Socialist Party. The discussion was titled “The discussion of the substance of the Cyprus problem at the multilateral conference in July, as a step towards real progress in the effort to find a solution.”

The political parties emphasized that for discussions on the substance to succeed, confidence-building measures should be simultaneously pursued by all parties to foster a conducive atmosphere of trust. They urged the UN Secretary General to stress the necessity of commencing substantive negotiations to the attendees of the upcoming multilateral conference on the Cyprus issue.

Moreover, the representatives called on all parties involved in the Middle East conflict to agree on a ceasefire, immediately end killings, and resort to diplomacy to achieve lasting peace in the region. The next meeting of the leaders and representatives of the political parties is scheduled for 30 July 2025, with the Turkish Cypriot Social Democratic Party (TDP) as the host.
