Former President Anastasiades Receives EJA King Solomon Award

Larnaca: The EJA King Solomon Award was presented to former President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades on Monday evening in Larnaca.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the award was presented at an event organised by the European Jewish Association in collaboration with the Jewish Community of Cyprus. The event was attended, among others, by former President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin.

Speaking at the event, former President Anastasiades said that the award is a testament to the principles that both countries share, such as democracy and tolerance, peace and understanding, the fight against anti-Semitism, racism, and all forms of human rights violations. He highlighted that the bilateral partnership during his presidency was manifested by tangible projects, ranging from defence and emergency response to energy, culture, healthcare, diaspora interaction, and integrating the Jewish community in Cyprus as an integral part of the island’s cultural interactions.

The former President expressed his hope that prudence will prevail, allowing for the resumption of meaningful negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, leading to a viable two-state solution, in line with internationally agreed parameters and in full respect of Israel’s territorial integrity and security.

Reuven Rivlin, former President of Israel, acknowledged the historical support that Cypriots provided to Holocaust refugees, offering them shelter. He emphasized the need to combat anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism, racism, and hatred, stating that the current adversaries are not freedom fighters but terrorists.

Yaron Zeloof, Head of the Jewish Community in Cyprus, remarked that over the years, the community has grown into a dynamic group contributing to life in Cyprus. He noted that its members work in various fields, including real estate, education, and tourism, and expressed hopes for the quick and safe return of hostages held in Gaza.

Rabbi Menachem Margolin, Head of the EJA, stated that the Jews in Cyprus feel safe, respected, and happy. He affirmed that the Jewish community in Cyprus will continue to enjoy a great relationship with the country and expressed confidence that Cyprus will serve as a shining example of the ideal relationship between a nation, the Jewish people, and the state of Israel to all European countries.
