Cyprus Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kombos, wrapped up a busy schedule at the United Nations on Friday, during the High-Level Week of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kombos held over 35 bilateral meetings with counterparts from around the globe. The primary goal of these discussions was to deepen existing relationships and explore potential collaborations with countries with which Cyprus does not frequently engage.
More specifically, Kombos had meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Bahrain, Laos, Algeria, Senegal, Cape Verde, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Palestine, Australia, Somalia, Dominica, Papua New Guinea, Lebanon, Morocco, Uganda, Egypt, Singapore, India, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, the UAE, Jordan, Guinea-Bissau, Albania, the Philippines, Togo, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Kyrgyzstan, Belize, Guinea, Gambia, and San Marino.
Additionally, he accompanied President Nikos Christodoulides at bilateral m
eetings throughout the High-Level Week and participated in various ministerial gatherings at the UN headquarters. He also took part in trilateral ministerial meetings among Cyprus, Egypt, and Greece, as well as among Cyprus, Jordan, and Greece.
On the final day of his meetings, Kombos engaged in successive discussions with Belize’s Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca, San Marino’s Foreign Minister Luca Beccari, Monaco’s Minister of Foreign Relations and Cooperation Isabelle Berro-Amadei, Liechtenstein’s Foreign Minister Dominique Hasler, Gambia’s Foreign Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara, and Guinea’s Foreign Minister Morissanda Kouyate. The focus of these talks was on enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation, the press release said.
Kombos also met with Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, Tajikistan’s Sirojiddin Mukhriddin, and Kyrgyzstan’s Zheenbek Kulubaev, exchanging views on the state of bilateral relations and the deepening of collaboration at regional and international levels. Notably, an
agreement to waive visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports was signed with the Kyrgyz Foreign Minister.
In discussions with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Kombos addressed worrisome regional developments, it is added.
Furthermore, Kombos met with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt to discuss strengthening Cyprus-U.S. cooperation in the energy sector, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Kombos attended also a luncheon hosted by President Christodoulides for the Permanent Representatives of the UN Security Council’s permanent members. He also participated in the dinner organised by the Federation of Cypriot Organisations in America in honour of the President
