First Mobile Desalination Units to Be Ready in October 2025, Says Water Development Department.

Nicosia: The Water Development Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment has announced that the first mobile desalination units are set to be completed by October 2025. This initiative marks a significant advancement in Cyprus’s efforts to optimize water resources and address water scarcity on the island.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus leads Europe in per capita storage of rainwater and the utilization of non-conventional water resources. The country boasts 110 dams, with 57 categorized as large, alongside five desalination plants that fulfill over 70% of household water needs. Furthermore, there are nine tertiary sewerage treatment plants in operation, which enable more than 80% of recovered water to be utilized for irrigation purposes.

The Water Development Department emphasized that the timeline for the mobile desalination units is based on meticulous planning. The process includes the awarding and licensing of the project, followed by the construction and
operational phases. The department’s initiative aims to enhance Cyprus’s water management infrastructure and ensure sustainable water supply solutions for the future.
