First Death of Patient with West Nile Virus Recorded in Cyprus for This Year

Nicosia: The first death from West Nile virus in Cyprus this year has been recorded, concerning a 90-year-old man, Infectious Disease Specialist Aristos Aristodemou told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA). He confirmed that the patient had underlying health conditions.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Aristodemou emphasized that this is an infection of the central nervous system and "some patients may not make it." The doctor told CNA that by Thursday evening, a total of 10 cases had been identified. Of these, seven are confirmed and the remaining three are probable cases. Among the patients with confirmed cases, four are hospitalized.

When asked about the preventive measures being taken, Aristodemou stated that measures are taken from the outset for each reported case. "Tracing is conducted, spraying, door-to-door operations, to identify and eliminate breeding sites, and if necessary, it is repeated," he noted. He pointed out that the majority of cases are located in the Nicosia district.
