Festival of Ancient Greek Drama Opens with ‘The Bacchae’ by Euripides

Nicosia: The Italian production ‘The Bacchae’ by Euripides, directed by Daniele Salvo, is set to open the 28th edition of the ‘International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama.’ This annual event is organized by the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the production will have its first presentation at the Makarios III Amphitheatre on July 9 at 21:00, followed by a performance at the Curium Ancient Theatre on July 12. Daniele Salvo, a prominent Italian director known for his reinterpretations of Greek tragedies, returns to the festival to direct ‘The Bacchae’ with a distinguished cast of Italian actors. The production is part of the Dide Cultural Association – Amenanos Festival.

‘The Bacchae’ is described as a ritual of feelings, emotions, rage, and unreason. It is notable for being the only existing tragedy that features the god Dionysus as a character, who punishes those resisting the force of nature and the transformative experience of divine intoxication. The production is deemed suitable for audiences aged 16 and above and has a duration of 110 minutes.
