EU’s Raffaele Fitto Set for High-Stakes Visit to Cyprus Amidst Renewed Settlement Efforts

Nicosia: European Commission Executive Vice President for Cohesion and Reforms, Raffaele Fitto, is scheduled to visit Cyprus in his inaugural trip to the island as the EU's Special Representative on the Cyprus issue. His visit, confirmed by a Commission spokesperson, will include meetings with President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhrman. This diplomatic engagement follows a visit by UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres, underscoring the international focus on resolving the long-standing Cyprus conflict.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Fitto's visit is strategically planned for Thursday, with his departure slated for Friday. The European Commission spokesperson emphasized that this visit reaffirms the EU's dedication to facilitating a resolution to the Cyprus issue, complementing the UN's ongoing efforts and Secretary-General Guterres' personal involvement.

The spokesperson elaborated that Fitto's mission is integral to advancing the UN-led settlement process, working in close coordination with Mar­a ngela Holgu­n Cu©llar, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus. The timing of Fitto's visit, immediately following Guterres' tour, highlights the renewed momentum in international diplomatic efforts.

Cyprus remains divided since 1974 due to Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern region. Despite numerous UN-led peace initiatives, a viable solution has been elusive, primarily due to Turkish resistance to proposed terms. The last attempt at negotiations, held in July 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without agreement.

After a series of informal talks in 2025 and a subsequent pause, preparations are in progress for a broader meeting aimed at reviving negotiations. As Guterres' term as Secretary-General approaches its conclusion, Mar­a Angela Holgu­n is actively engaging with involved parties. In this context, Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto's role as the EU's Special Representative for Cyprus is critical, taking over from former EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
