Brussels: The European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) have formalized a new agenda for cooperation in research and innovation. This initiative, which was solidified through a ministerial declaration, aims to strengthen the partnership between the two regions and address common challenges through joint efforts in health, climate change, sustainability, and technology.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this ministerial meeting, co-chaired by EU Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva, marked the first of its kind between the EU and CELAC. The agreements set forth shared priorities and concrete actions, including the establishment of working groups focused on health, climate change, environmental sustainability and energy transition, and the application of artificial intelligence in scientific research.
Both regions have committed to promoting open science and facilitating researcher mobility as part of their joint efforts. The partners will meet biennially to evaluate progress and set new priorities, ensuring sustained strategic direction for their cooperation.
Commissioner Zaharieva emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating that the shared roadmap will enable scientists and researchers on both sides of the Atlantic to achieve tangible results, benefiting both societies and economies.
