European Parliament Session Focuses on International Women’s Day and Support for Belarus

Brussels: European President Roberta Metsola inaugurated the 10-13 March session, emphasizing the European Parliament’s commitment to supporting the people of Belarus and Ukraine, alongside marking International Women’s Day.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Metsola highlighted the session’s focus on welcoming prominent female leaders, including Belarus’s national leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, to honor their efforts in pursuing freedom. The Parliament reiterated its support for Belarus, offering MEPs the opportunity to send postcards to the 1,250 political prisoners held by the Lukashenka regime.

President Metsola also commemorated the 35th anniversary of the Baltic countries’ assertion of state continuity, reflecting on the sacrifices made to maintain independence under international law during periods of occupation. The session also acknowledged the second anniversary of the Tempi railway accident in Greece, extending condolences to victims and their families.

The agenda for the session included a report on the immunity of Adam Bielan and adjustments to debates on critical medicines and a common approach on returns. Additionally, a Commission statement on secessionist threats in Bosnia and Herzegovina was added, extending the session until 23.00 on Wednesday. Corrigenda under Rule 251(4) will be approved unless contested by political groups or a sufficient number of Members.
