Strasbourg: "You are not alone and will never be alone," European Parliament President Roberta Metsola assured the Cypriot people during her address on Monday evening. Her comments were made in light of the current developments and the turbulent situation unfolding in the Middle East, as she spoke from the floor of the institution's plenary session in Strasbourg.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Metsola emphasized the commitment of European solidarity towards Cyprus amidst growing concerns. "European solidarity is real, tangible, and on your side. We will send the clearest message that Europe remains steadfast and united. The security of Cyprus is the security of the European Union," she affirmed. Metsola further stressed the unacceptability of any attacks against European targets or Member States, asserting that Europe's unity is evident when its resolve is tested.
Metsola expressed the European Union's empathy for those who have suffered, acknowledging the decades of hardship endured by many. "We think of the mothers who searched among the corpses, the political prisoners who were unjustly imprisoned, those who were tortured, those who were hanged, those who suffered for their lives, their freedom, their women," she stated.
In addition, she condemned the attack outside a synagogue in Li¨ge, Belgium, sending a strong message against anti-Semitism. Metsola emphasized that Europe is a place where Jews can live without fear, reaffirming the continent's commitment to combating such threats.
