Brussels: The European Commission has introduced the ProtectEU agenda, a comprehensive plan to enhance Europe's response to terrorism and violent extremism. This initiative aims to address the evolving threats posed by terrorism, particularly the misuse of digital technologies and the radicalization of minors, by implementing cross-sectoral measures to improve preparedness and protection across the EU.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the agenda is part of the European Internal Security Strategy and includes six pillars designed to anticipate threats, prevent radicalization, protect people online and in physical environments, respond to attacks, and cooperate with international partners. A key focus is on the increasing misuse of technologies like social media, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing in terrorist activities, as well as the geopolitical challenges posed by state and non-state actors.
To anticipate threats, the Commission proposes enhancing intelligence analysis and Europol's analytical support, as well as investing in research on emerging technologies. Preventing radicalization involves creating a Prevention Toolbox and funding community engagement programs to empower youth and promote digital resilience. Online protections include revising existing regulations and strengthening cooperation with service providers to remove extremist content.
The agenda also emphasizes physical security by proposing measures to monitor individuals posing threats and investing in projects to secure public spaces. It aims to improve law enforcement cooperation to respond swiftly to attacks and prevent terrorism financing. International cooperation will be strengthened through partnerships, especially in the Mediterranean and Western Balkans.
This initiative underlines the EU's commitment to safeguarding its citizens by adapting to new challenges and leveraging advanced technology and global cooperation efforts.
