European Commission Unveils 2026 Work Programme to Enhance Sovereignty and Independence

Brussels: The European Commission has unveiled its 2026 work programme, aiming to build a more sovereign and independent Europe by addressing security threats, economic risks, and climate change.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the programme, titled ‘Europe’s independence moment,’ aligns with commitments from President Ursula von der Leyen’s political guidelines and the 2025 State of the Union address. It focuses on strengthening competitiveness, leading in clean and digital innovation, and ensuring collective security.

The programme emphasizes simplification and implementation, with the Commission set to reduce red tape and cut costs. An overview report highlights progress, including six omnibus packages and proposals aiming for annual cost savings of over £8.6 billion. Key sectors like automotive, environment, and taxation will see further simplification proposals.

The 2026 work programme outlines several deliverables, including sustainable prosperity through an Industrial Accelerator Act and a Critical Raw Materials Centre. Defence priorities include strengthening the EU’s capabilities and cooperation, while social measures will address affordability and a Quality Jobs Act. The Commission will also propose strategies to support farmers, ensure climate resilience, and enhance democracy.

Global engagement will be reinforced, with continued support for Ukraine and Moldova, and efforts to reform humanitarian aid. The Commission calls for swift agreement on the proposed Multiannual Financial Framework to underpin these ambitions.
