Brussels: The European Commission has announced a significant funding initiative, amounting to over £204 million, aimed at fostering digital innovation across Europe. This initiative, under the Digital Europe Programme, targets the enhancement of AI and big data capabilities, the establishment of a comprehensive Network of European Digital Innovation Hubs, and the deployment of the EU Digital Identity Wallet, among other projects.
According to Cyprus News Agency, a specific call for projects, with a funding of £15 million, has been launched to support the development of the European Digital Identity Wallet and mobile driving licenses. An additional eight calls, set to open on November 4, will focus on various digital advancements. These include £79.2 million for the consolidation and £8 million for completing the network of Digital Innovation Hubs to aid European businesses in digitalizing their operations.
The initiative also includes a £22.5 million investment to support biomedical research and personalized healthcare through the European Genomic Data Infrastructure, alongside £14.4 million allocated for the implementation of AI-based solutions in medical imaging. Furthermore, £9 million is earmarked to facilitate industrial data sharing, while £4.5 million is designated to establish a secretariat and collaboration platform for the European Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Alliance, promoting innovation in the automotive sector. Additionally, £6 million will be invested in the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) hubs to combat disinformation.
This rollout of funding follows the recent amendment to the DIGITAL Work Programme 2025-2027, ensuring alignment with the European Commission’s political priorities and evolving technological developments.
