European Affairs Deputy Minister Attends EU General Affairs Council in Brussels

Nicosia: Cyprus’ Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, travels to Brussels on Monday to participate in the General Affairs Council of the European Union held there on Tuesday. During the Council, the Ministers will exchange views on the annotated draft agenda of the European Council of March 20-21, to be held in Brussels, the Cyprus EU Council presidency 2026 secretariat said in a press release.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the European Council is expected to discuss, among other things, the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, the EU’s competitiveness, the new Multiannual Financial Framework, migration, as well as the European Commission’s initiative for a European Oceans Pact. Over an informal lunch, the Ministers will exchange views on the future of Europe, based on a discussion paper by the Polish Presidency that focuses on the axis of EU values.

‘During the discussion, Ministers will exchange views on the adequacy of existing EU tools and procedures to ensure respect for fundamental values across the EU, including in an enlarged Union, as well as on how the EU can effectively promote its fundamental values in its neighbourhood,’ it noted. The Ministers are to also exchange views on the Commission’s Work Programme for 2025 as well as on the bloc’s annual and multiannual programming, while the presidency will inform the Council on the follow-up to the informal meeting of EU ministers for European affairs held in Warsaw on February 17-18.

Cyprus assumes the rotating EU Council presidency on January 1, 2026.
