Limassol: EuroBasket 2025 is considered a significant milestone for sports events in Cyprus, showcasing that a small country with big ambitions can stand on equal footing with top European destinations, according to President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. He made this statement on Wednesday during an event discussing the progress of the Spyros Kyprianou arena’s upgrade for EuroBasket 2025, as well as the agreement between the Cyprus Basketball Federation (KOK) and EKO for the national teams’ new jerseys.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Government has invested 15 million pounds in upgrading the Spyros Kyprianou stadium. This upgrade has already attracted interest from international teams wishing to use the facility for their European and other obligations. President Christodoulides emphasized that hosting one of the four groups of the EuroBasket’s final phase in Cyprus is a milestone with a multidimensional impact on the country’s sporting events.
The investment in the arena is seen as an opportunity to enhance Cyprus’s international image and create new prospects for sports, encouraging youth participation. The event is also expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors to Limassol and Cyprus, providing a significant boost to the local community, businesses, and tourism.
President Christodoulides has extended invitations to the Prime Ministers of all countries participating in the Cyprus group to visit and watch the games. Cyprus, along with co-hosts Finland, Poland, and Latvia, will hold 15 matches at the Spyros Kyprianou arena in Limassol from August 28 to September 4, 2025.
