Luxembourg: EU Transport Ministers reached a political agreement, by qualified majority, to start negotiations with the European Parliament on the reform of the current regulations on air passenger rights and air carrier liability.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the agreement was reached during the EU Council in Luxembourg. Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades, in his intervention pointed out that Cyprus recognizes the importance of reaching a balanced political agreement on this crucial issue, a Ministry press release said here on Thursday evening.
The proposed changes, he added, safeguard the rights of passengers, providing clarity, consistency, and timely assistance when their travels were disrupted. He expressed Cyprus’ support for the compromise text submitted by the Polish Presidency, stressing that Cyprus has contributed constructively and responsibly to achieving progress on this dossier since the beginning of the discussions, the press release added.

and transport, the Minister of Transport welcomed the Commission’s recent proposal to revise the Roadworthiness Package. He noted that it is the right time to modernize the specific framework and address new realities, such as the increase in electric and hybrid vehicles, emissions systems, and undetected recalls and safety defects in cars.
According to the press release, the Minister pointed out that Cyprus fully supports the efforts to enhance road safety and reduce pollutant emissions, stressing that this proposal will be a priority of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026.
On the sidelines of the Council and in view of the assumption of the EU Presidency by Cyprus, Vafeades had bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Greece, Christos Dimas, and Ireland, Sean Canney, during which they exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
