Brussels: The European Commission announced the disbursement of £3.3 billion to Ukraine for defence procurement, focusing on drones and missiles, under the £90 billion Ukraine Support Loan. This initiative aims to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities amidst ongoing aggression from Russia.

According to Cyprus News Agency, this payment marks the fourth installment to Ukraine under the Ukraine Support Loan's defense framework. To date, the Commission has allocated nearly £15 billion to Ukraine this year, encompassing both defense and broader support. The Ukraine Support Loan comprises £30 billion for budgetary assistance and £60 billion earmarked for defense spanning 2026 to 2027.

Efforts to accelerate EU deliveries are essential for Ukraine to maintain a military advantage, necessitating swift availability of critical resources in substantial quantities. The strategy includes destocking, reprioritizing orders, and increasing production to meet these demands.

President Ursula von der Leyen, in her State of the Union address and a recent conversation with President Zelenskyy, indicated the Commission's readiness to utilize remaining funds from the Security Action for Europe instrument to initiate a new joint EU-Ukraine program. This program aims to develop a European air and missile defense system, leveraging the existing Freya anti-ballistic system. It seeks to integrate Ukraine's battlefield experiences with Europe's industrial and technological capabilities, promoting enhanced defense collaboration.
