Brussels: The European Commission has intensified its investigation into Platform X by implementing three additional technical investigatory measures concerning the platform’s recommender system. These measures are part of the formal proceedings initiated on December 18, 2023, under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
According to Cyprus News Agency, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that platforms operating within the EU adhere to DSA obligations. The Commission aims to create an online environment that is fair, safe, and democratic for European citizens. As part of the investigatory measures, Platform X is required to submit internal documentation regarding its recommender systems, including any recent changes, by February 15, 2025.
Additionally, a retention order mandates that Platform X preserve internal documents and information about future alterations to the design and functioning of its recommender algorithms from January 17, 2025, to December 31, 2025, unless the investigation concludes earlier. The Commission has also requested access to certain commercial APIs of Platform X to facilitate direct fact-finding on content moderation and account virality. These steps are intended to support the Commission’s comprehensive assessment of systemic risks and mitigation strategies under the DSA.
