Brussels: “The European Commission congratulates Tufan Erhrman on his election as leader of the Turkish Cypriot community,” the EC says in a brief statement issued on Monday evening and following a request from CNA during the briefing of accredited journalists.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the European Union is fully committed to supporting the resumption of negotiations aimed at achieving a viable and functional, comprehensive settlement. This settlement is intended to be within the framework of the United Nations and in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and aligned with the principles on which the EU is founded and its acquis.
The European Union has expressed its readiness to play an active role, utilizing all available means and tools, in supporting all stages of the UN-led process for the reunification of Cyprus. In this context, the appointment of Johannes Hahn as Special Envoy is intended to contribute to the UN Secretary General’s efforts to resume negotiations for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation in line with UNSCRs.
