ERATOSTHENES Centre to Lead Pan-European Cultural Property Protection Initiative

Nicosia: The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (ECoE) will lead the newly approved COST Action ‘Cultural Property Protection for All’ (CPP4ALL), “a major pan-European initiative under the framework of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST Association)”.

According to Cyprus News Agency, COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding organisation for research and innovation networks. It helps connect research initiatives across Europe and beyond, enabling researchers and innovators to grow their ideas in any science and technology field by sharing them with their peers. COST Actions are bottom-up networks with a duration of four years that boost research, innovation, and careers.

The CPP4ALL Action aims to strengthen the protection of cultural property through interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative technologies, and inclusive approaches. It is the only COST Action led by a Cypriot institution selected under the highly competitive OC-2024-1 Open Call.

“Receiving an exceptional score of 46 out of 50, CPP4ALL was ranked among the top proposals and is one of only 70 new Actions funded out of more than 850 submissions across Europe,” it notes.

It adds that “this groundbreaking initiative will be the first COST Action focused specifically on Cultural Property Protection” and will address key areas like overarching legislative frameworks, variations in legal protections for antiquities, illegal archaeological excavations, and repatriation and restitution of cultural property.

Chairing the Action on behalf of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is Dr. Dante Abate. “This is a fantastic opportunity to unite efforts across disciplines and borders to safeguard our shared cultural heritage. We are proud to be the only Cypriot institution selected as a coordinator in this call and to lead such a landmark initiative in the field of cultural property protection,” he said.

The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and its Cultural Heritage Cluster, established at the forefront of Cultural Property Protection, warmly invite all interested parties to join the CPP4ALL Action and contribute to this collaborative effort, the press release concludes.
