The election campaign for Sunday’s presidential elections ended at midnight.
With fourteen candidates on the ballot, a record number for Presidential elections, the polls open Sunday for a new President for Cyprus, for a five year term.
According to the Chief Returning Officer on Saturday 4 February and Sunday 5 February 2023, that is the eve and the day of the election public gatherings, as well as the organization of speeches and public debates, on any issues which are directly or indirectly related to the elections are prohibited. It notes that offenders are guilty of a criminal offence and upon conviction are subject to imprisonment for up to one year or a fine of up to €5,000 or both penalties together.
Voting takes place from seven in the morning to six in the afternoon with a one-hour break, between twelve and one.
The candidates are: the President of DISY Averof Neophytou, the former negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis, backed by left wing AKEL, the former Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, backed mainly by DIKO, EDEK and DIPA, far right wing ELAM President Christos Christou, lawyer Achilleas Demetriades, lawyer Yiorgos Kolokasides, former Rector of University of Cyprus Constantinos Christofides and Charalambos Aristotelous, Andreas Efstratiou, Ioulia Hovrina Komninos, Celestina De Petro, Loukas Stavrou, Alexios Savvides and Andronikos Zervides.
